Malvinder of Ranbaxy shifts the poverty line
After reading the headline in Economic Times today, I had a hearty laugh. Thanks to Malvinder and Shivinder Singh of Ranbaxy, I went through laughter therapy. I think it will do a lot of good to my blood pressure level.
The joke is that after selling their stake fot Rs. 10,000 crores, they went beggingto SEBI to make an exception in their case by relaxing some rules so that they can save Rs. 1000 crores in taxes. I would certainly like to read the reasons they must have given to SEBI to relax the rules. I am sure the reason must have been as pathbreaking as their decision to sell their stake was. Let me try and guess what these pathbreaking reasons could be but let me warn you before hand that I am not as intelligent as these guys are, so I could be completely off track. But you should give me credit for trying. Some of these reasons could be as follows:
(a) Just before we sold the stake, the poverty line went over Rs. 10,000 crores. Now after deducting taxes, we will be left with just Rs. 9000 crores. Now this is not fair. We should not tax long term gains for people below the poverty line.
(b) Without the additional Rs. 1000 crores, how will we work for the good of the country. If we invest Rs. 1000 crores less in properties and in Religare, how will the country prosper? For us to pay Rs. 1000 crores in taxes is not a good decision for the country.
(c) We will not be able to build as many hospitals for people below the poverty line of Rs. 10,000 crores. This is also not good for the prosperity of the company.
Of course, later I realized that they have put 99.9% of the people in this country including yours truly below the poverty line. Now this pissed me off as I thought I was above the poverty line. It hurt my self esteem.
I don’t know about you but I would feel realy stupid making such a stupid request. When you make money, you have to pay taxes. Maybe Malvinder ans Shivinder need to go through a Civic101 course. And these guys call themselves a good corporate and individual citizens.

I am Major Arun Kumar Jha, a 37 yr old serving officer of the Indian Army, originally from a village in Madhubani district of North Bihar; though born and brought up in Lonavla in Pune district of Maharashtra state in India. Certain plans for enhancing the food security of India by leveraging the fertile plains of North Bihar are coming through me by the grace of HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (’Art of Living’).
The plans have been prepared on the assumption that the funds would be available for all stages of the enterprise presently envisioned. The funds would be procured through Donations/Grants from all possible sources of funding in India and around the world.
The Private enterprise plans to encourage the residents of the fertile plains of North Bihar to take to agriculture related entrepreneurship in North Bihar itself. ‘Food Parks’ of the enterprise would provide the related guidance to the residents of North Bihar in raising their own food processing units (FPUs) and the Marketing of the products stored in the godowns of the ‘Food Parks’ would be coordinated over Internet from a city in another state in India. Military (well researched) systems would be employed in the enterprise, and decided profit percentages would be charged from the FPUs for Packaging, Storage and Marketing of their produce.
The planned enterprise would be operated in three distinct stages.
• Stage I: A Private Profit making FPU (on funds of minimum $ 1 Million) would be operated in Madhubani district in North Bihar over three yrs in order to validate the concept of the enterprise and to gain the experience required for effectively framing the systems for these plans.
• Stage II: After gaining experience over three yrs, the first ‘Food Park’ of the enterprise would be raised in Madhubani district in North Bihar (on Venture Capital funds or donations/grants of minimum $ 50 Million)
• Stage III: ‘Food Parks’ on similar lines could later be raised in identified (flood free) areas in other districts of North Bihar.
